Social media: creating demand

6 minutes · 8 steps · workout 3 of 6 in this module

What you'll be able to do

By the end of this workout, you'll be able to explain why social media works differently from search, pick the platform that fits a product, and judge a social campaign by cost per order instead of likes.

A first look: Social creates demand, and your creative is the targeting

On social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, LinkedIn for B2B), people are there to be entertained or to see friends, not to shop. That makes social the channel for reaching people who don't know they need you yet. Two things are true in 2026. First, organic reach is small: a post typically reaches a few percent of your followers, so followers are not a distribution channel. Paid social is how you actually reach people. Second, platforms like Meta Advantage+ and TikTok's automated targeting mostly ignore your audience settings and learn from who stops on your ad. So the video and the first line decide who sees it. Good social creative shows the problem in the first two seconds, in the viewer's own words, and looks like something a person would post, not a brand.

Example: Green Garden Skincare's best-performing ad is a phone video of someone wiping shiny foundation off at 3 p.m. with the line “If your moisturizer makes you oily by lunch.” No logo until the last second.

What this workout covers

  1. Social creates demand, and your creative is the targeting
  2. Case: 900,000 views, 22 orders
  3. Why creator content works: social proof
  4. Case: One big creator or three small ones?

A question from this workout: 900,000 views, 22 orders

A Green Garden Skincare TikTok about layering serum went viral without any ad spend. The team is arguing: one person says it was a huge success, another says it was a waste of time because it barely sold anything.

What actually happened, and what's the next move?

  1. The video failed. Stop making educational content and post product photos instead
  2. Awareness worked, conversion didn't. Retarget the 3,100 visitors and the video viewers with an offer, pin a comment with a link, and capture emails, so the attention isn't wasted
  3. It was a total success. Put $5,000 behind the same video as an ad and expect proportional sales
  4. Delete the link from the bio, since people clearly don't click from TikTok

Pick your answer first, then open the reasoning below.

Show the answer and the reasoning

Answer: B. Awareness worked, conversion didn't. Retarget the 3,100 visitors and the video viewers with an offer, pin a comment with a link, and capture emails, so the attention isn't wasted

A viral view is a stranger seeing you once. 22 orders from $0 is fine, but the real value is the 900,000 people who now know the brand and the 3,100 who visited. That's a warm audience you can bring back cheaply. The most common mistake is judging a top-of-funnel video by orders alone and killing the format. The video did its job; the next step was missing.

The other steps work the same way: you decide first, then see why each option is right or wrong.
